A Brief History of the Chinese Lantern

July 17th, 2009

Sky lanterns (also knows as a sky candle or Chinese lantern) are airborne paper lanterns traditionally seen in East Asian cultures. They are made from oiled rice paper on a bamboo chassis, and contain a little candle or fuel cell compiled of a waxy burnable material. When lit, the flame heats up the air inside the lantern, hence bringing down its concentration causing the lantern to lift into the atmosphere. The Sky Lantern is just airborne for as long as the fire stays lit, after which the lantern drifts back to the ground. They can achieve quite a elevation and unveiling them in powerful currents of air is not advocated.Sky lanterns are also referred to as sky candles or fire balloons, still this term is also applied to refer to balloon munitions used during World War II.According to common lore, the Kongming Lantern was the 1st hot air balloon, said to be invented by the sage and military strategian Zhuge Liang, whose reverent term of address (i.e. Chinese style name) was Kongming. They were first deployed at the turn over of the 3rd century as a type of signalling balloon or, it is claimed, as a type of spy blimp in warfare. Alternately the name may come from the lantern’s resemblance to the hat Kongming is traditionally shown to be wearing.

Sixteen Years of the Real World

January 14th, 2009

Sixteen years ago there was a new show that was aired on MTV and the name of the show was “The Real World - New York”. I am not aware as to who originally thought up of the idea to create this show, but they are brilliant and this show has provided hundreds and thousands of people great quality entertainment for many years. How many years, a total of sixteen the show has been running. Not many television shows have that long of a lifespan, it might even be a record for most consecutive seasons.

The Real World is filmed over a number of weeks, about sixteen. What happens is that there are five teenagers, or early to mid twenty year olds placed into one house to live together. The directors and creators of the show spend a great deal of time picking the people out for the show, but after that it is all real and no one knows what it will play out like over the next sixteen weeks. They try and pick people from quite a diverse background, upbringing, and beliefs so that when they are all together there will be a vast amount of topics to discuss.

Watching the real world is fun and something that so many people just love to do. There is a show on once a week at the same time so each episode builds on the next. It seems that each episode ends so that you want to watch the next one more than anything in this world. A fun and healthy day could be going to work, and after work taking the Acceletrim diet aid and going for a swim at the pool, then go home and eat a healthy dinner with the family, and then finally turning on the Real World. There is a new season starting soon, and it is being filmed in Brooklyn, NY. It should be great just like all of the many others.

The HDTV Bubble

September 1st, 2008

The boundaries have shifted. In the past, we started receiving the first broadcasted images in out homes. As TVs took off, people were generally content with whatever image was beamed into their world. Then most people rejected their old sets once color TVs came onto the market. An luckily for us, in line with the introduction of other technologies, HDTV has stepped up to the plate. Gone are the days when you could be happy with washed-out colors and a low resolution. Now you want a clearer picture and sharper colors, and you want it all for an affordable price.

HDTV is the newest advance in television technology.Start thinking about making the switch, or convincing one of your friends to do so, so that your can enjoy. HDTV provides a supreme image. Picture it this way, watching a standard TV is like viewing the world through a dirty windowpane. With HDTV, there is no window. The images on the television screen are as close to lifelike as you can get, that is, without actually getting off the couch and watching real-life images. An HDTV can accomplish this feat with its high resolution; a million pixels, often more, combine to create a brilliant picture that will wow any viewer.

But technology always comes at a price. Fortunately, prices are falling every year. Five years ago, most people were priced out of the HDTV market.

However, you need to be aware of a few facts. A new HDTV is the whole equation.First, you will need a high-definition cable or satellite box. This sends the HD channels to your television; without one, you can only watch standard programming. Second, you will need high-def channels. Your cable or satellite provider offers a line-up of HD channels, though the number of available HD channels is nowhere close the number of available standard channels. Third, you will need an HD show or movie. Not all shows broadcast on an HD station are necessarily high-definition; news programs are often broadcast in standard-definition, as are most daytime programs. If you are watching a standard-def show, you may see a black bar on either side of the screen. Also, since you are watching a standard-def show on a high-def screen, the picture will not be nearly as clear or as sharp as with an HD program. Only when you have all three elements - an HD box, channel and show - can you experience television like never before.

New York City’s Golden Gates

May 17th, 2008

The greatest city on earth has another reason to brag with the unveiling of the long-awaited public art project The Gates by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Despite its popularity, some visitors feel the $21 million art installation is not art at all. Whether a work of art or spectacle, the orange flags strung like a ribbon throughout Central Park are sparking conversation and drawing in visitors by the subway load.

According to the Central Park Conservancy, which sells official Gates merchandise at the Park’s entrance on 59th Street, 10 to 20 million people are expected to visit the park during the 16 days that The Gates are on display.

“February is the slowest month for tourism in the city and the exhibit has already brought an unexpected number to the park, which is usually dead in the winter,” said Central Park Conservancy staff member, Chris Trimbull, 25. “I think it’s more popular than anyone had realized.”

Before The Gates opened, a mere 200,000 visitors were expected, however, the day after Mayor Michael Bloomberg unfurled the 1,089,882 square feet of streaming saffron fabric along 23 miles of park paths, attendance was already at 700,000 people.

Standing 16 feet high, The Gates are attracting the young, elderly, tourists and students alike, who took photographs, held hands, and observed the temporary display, despite temperatures falling below freezing.

New York’s AM news station 1010 WINS recently conducted an online web poll asking if The Gates are art or joke. Out of 1298 respondents, 65% said joke.

Lou Quillio is in agreement. With his sister and two daughters, he drove three hours from Saratoga, New York to see the golden gates. “It’s just a thing, it’s less the art and more the social aspect, it’s an attraction and a spectacle,” said Quillio.

His sister Susan, however, disagreed, saying, “It’s beautiful against all the gray rocks and bare trees.”

No matter what people thought, everyone visiting the park seemed to discuss the artistic merits of the project, even talking to strangers in a city of people who rarely make eye contact.

The communal experience, says Beth Fichtel who works in Manhattan, is better than the 7,500 steel structures wrapped throughout the park. “The energy in the air is contagious and it’s cool to be in something as enormous as Central Park and be surrounded by tons of people all talking about the same thing.”

While he jogged underneath the colorful billowing fabric, Manhattan resident Danny Schwartz asked, “I like it, but I don’t think it can be defined as art, but who’s to say really?”

Well, architectural student Amanda Herron, 22, reverently believes that Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s work is highly creative and refused to miss their recent endeavor, so she flew in from Alabama just for the event.

“Their art is inspiring, we study their installations in school and how they are able to change a space dramatically, then leave and change what people originally thought of the space,” said Herron. “It is so interesting, it comes and people soak it in, and then it’s gone.”

Herron further suspects that even after The Gates are removed, people will still be discussing them. For now her theory is true, The Gates are a big topic of conversation and debate at the office, in the news and around the world.

Rewriting your Screenplay: The Road to your Audience

May 14th, 2008

The promise of the rewrite is very sweet. I have collected
evidence that the more authentic the labor put into rewriting
your screenplay, the greater the reward, and the reward is high,
for whatever lovely, wonderful moments you might have discovered
in the frightening process of plowing through the first draft,
those moments, those seeds, are only seeds, and they only
fulfill their destiny as giant, involving scenes in the movie
that screens before people. So if I shortcut my revision, I will
miss the prize, pure and simple.

The process of rewriting is recreating. I need to make a
contract with myself to make room in every moment of my writing
for the imaginative magic of inspiration, that flash of
brilliance which some call talent, the muse, God, or
desperation, to deliver something that did not exist just a
second before, but now lives forever, like a huge white rabbit
suddenly from a hat. This usually happens when my fingers are on
the keyboard and there’s white below from where I’m typing, and
I have no idea where I’m going. Or if I have some idea, I don’t
have the answer, but I trust and that’s it.

Rewriting is technically every change you make to your draft.
There, I said it, so now you can’t come back and argue with me
about what you think a rewrite is. But now I will tell you what
rewriting really is, or what it really is not. Rewriting is not
cutting and pasting. It’s not reading through your draft on your
computer screen and changing words. It’s not pushing your cursor
down the page, highlighting text and deleting it. I think this
is called editing or deleting or garbage time or easy on the
damn brain, but it’s not called rewriting over in the bust your
ass capital of screenplay planet.

Rewriting is almost starting completely over. It’s almost
accepting that you have nothing after celebrating like you won
your tenth super bowl simply by typing the end and poking two
brass fasteners through a pile of paper. Rewriting is taking
that pile of paper, plopping it beside you where you can see it
without a lot of movement of the head, and copying it over with
an industrious attitude.

Okay, basically if you open a new file and name it second draft,
or seventh, or whatever, lie all you want, but if you simply
copy it over and the only thing that gets changed is the things
that make you physically jerk in your chair, then you are not
rewriting with an industrious attitude. An industrious attitude
can mean a lot of things, I will probably call it something else
next week, but it simply means you are open to work, and with a
rewrite, the premise to work is the belief your script needs
work. If you can’t see much wrong, how can it need a lot of
work, and how is the rewrite going to work? It won’t. So make
sure you have an open bent, and start typing it over.

What happens? Well, if you’ve never done it, I’m not gonna tell
you. A lot of screenwriters won’t even admit it they’ve never
done it, because it breaks your neck. If you have done it, it’s
almost time we did it again. Either way, go.

Now, how do I find out what’s broken? It’s not all on one page,
and it’s hard to see the big picture of the awful thing. Well,
this isn’t a book, this is just a short essay, so here’s a short
list of tools to get yourself into and ready for your
rewrite.

First, you got ask yourself, what’s the story, or more
specifically, what are the stories? I usually make up a list of
sentences that start with “The story of…” and fill in the
blanks. What are the stories that are emerging from your current
draft? What does your spirit want to tell versus what your poor
brain thought you were going to do back in the coffee shop? You
might find the list is long, and that’s a problem, too. There’s
usually a main one, maybe one close behind, then a few tiny
sweet ones. There is your family of stories. There they are.
Now. How are you treating them?

This is where you can make some kind of a chart. Like a
spreadsheet or something. Or the back of a dry cleaning receipt
will do. Divide up your script into the beginning, act one, act
two, act three, and the finish. By the way, I know there’s all
sorts of act divisions. Modify my directions at your will. It’s
fine. So within this chart you will pencil in the beats that
exist within the current layout of your script. When you’re done
charting the arcs of your family of stories, you will
undoubtedly find HOLES. Wow. Nothing’s there. Didn’t see that
before. Okay, you better put something in there.

Let’s say you got your chart pretty full, in fact, it looks like
the stories of your movie have something resembling a beginning,
middle and end. Now what you need is to make every scene as good
as your best scene. Yeah, terrible news. How do you determine
this? Grade your scenes. Some scenes might get an A. Others
maybe a B. Give your work an F or two. Once you do this, you
will know what scenes are functioning as placeholders and what
are moneymakers. In the end, rewriting is making everything the
most special ever. Anything short, and you have more rewriting
to do. Unless you can live with an uneven ride. But this is a
rewriting article, not a give up article.

Finally, a reminder. Screenwriting becomes artful when
compression arrives. Shorten your everything. All dialogue and
description is representative of this life traveled through a
living soul. Uh, that’s you. A screenplay is just another poem,
it’s just another small bit resembling something we recognize as
human beings. Seven Samurai is a very short movie compared to
what happens in a life, even shorter stacked against forever.
But it lives beyond forever, doesn’t it?

Discover DVD Systems

April 26th, 2008

What is a Digital Versatile Disc Recorder; it largely is a disc recorder that lets you to tape your favourite TV language programmes or films onto re-writable Digital Discs. They can be bought both as installable storage devices for notebooks or as individual components for use in studios or home cinema systems. When DVD Systems were first bought you could by far be expected to pay anything up to two thousand pounds for a bog standard system, this is in recent times no longer the case.

DVD System’s are now extraordinarily in style & have utterly taken over the tape recorder, which is now nearly in the past. Like everything that include a technology base behind it there are many different DVD recorders to buy from. The most admired ones to go for are DVD systems with built in Hard Drives. This is a recording machine but it does not allow viewers to halt and rewind similar to what you would be capable to do on live telly. The rationale of the Hard Drive in the DVD system is so that you are able to store many telly sport programmes to the Hard Drive that can afterwards be backed up onto a rewritable DVD. As well as this you can record immediately onto DVD. Catch Digital Direct’s savings on Pioneer DVD Recorders!

Several Digital Versatile Disc systems with Hard Drives in the main contain an EPG for programming recordings. There are presently hundreds of DVD Recorders with Hard backup drives to pick up from universally recognised and loved brands like that of Sony, Pioneer, Toshiba and others.

The good thing currently is that DVD recorders have for no reason been this easy on your wallet, therefore it’s possible for you to obtain a top of the range system for a very good fee. The market is driven by the latest equipment, new advancements & product quality, of which these are changing nearly every day of the week.

Children’s Online Games

April 1st, 2008

While the World Wide Web expands, more and more individuals are
getting online for all of their necessities and for their
enjoyment. Online games are just one of the many different ways
to enjoy the internet. But, there is a newer trend happening
right now. Instead of just throwing our attentions to online
gaming atmospheres, we can also allow our children to enjoy the
wider world of entertaining online. But, is it safe? And, even
if it is, should we allow our children to be using online gaming
at all? Is it any better than them sitting in front of a
television?

Many parents simply do not have the time to monitor all the
activity their children are having online. All parents need to
know that there are many predators online that are seeking out
our youngsters. But, there are ways to prevent them from coming
near to our children. For example, in online gaming rooms, you
can easily disable chatting and interaction. You can also
disable instant messages as well. Yet, an even more effective
manner for protecting our children while they are online is to
simply keep the computer they will be using right in the living
room, the kitchen or in any area that is open where you can see
what’s going on just by turning your head. When parents are
aware of what is going on while their children are online, they
can keep their children better protected. And, it’s never too
soon to talk to your children about stranger danger even on the
computer.

Okay, but what about the gaming? Should we allow our children
online to play games?

It is important to break down some age levels here. For children
who are young, it is essential to allow them time to learn about
computers, but you need to do it in a one on one situation. In
these cases, there are many games that are actually quite
beneficial for them to play. Many games can teach reading
skills, math skills, and many other aspects of learning. And,
because it is fun, kids simply love to do it. They enjoy the
colors, the sounds, and the idea of playing with Mommy or Daddy.
It’s a great time for some bonding as well.

Then, we can look towards the older age. Those who enjoy
cartoons on television will love the games that focus around
these topics. And, you’ll find many games that do. Online games
like these can help with motor skills and computer usage skills.
But, why not teach them a little by getting them into a
different type of game, one that will challenge them. For
example, word puzzles and just puzzles in general can stimulate
the mind in many ways. Or, teach them a little history with a
program like Oregon (or Amazon) Trail in which they need to
survive a treacherous trek through the wilderness. Even older
children can benefit from the “Sim” games as well. The less
violent ones are better because they teach your little
entrepreneurs to use many skills to build cities, buildings,
companies…you get the idea.

When it comes to allowing teens online, you really need to allow
at least some online time. At that age, they are into
communicating with their friends through email and instant
messages, but interactive games are very popular. Competing
against friends is a definite need that many kids have. Is it
any worse or any better than a Playstation or Xbox system?
Probably not, but at least they are interacting with others.
And, you can somewhat monitor their actions or limit their
internet exploring when you provide them with what many ISP’s
are offering and that is parental controls on accounts set up
just for kids.

So, where does that leave us and the online gaming world? Should
children be allowed online? Yes, we believe that kids of all
ages should at least have the opportunity to learn how to use
the computer. It is an essential skill. But, what about playing
games? Yes, they need this too. In a safe environment, there are
few other places that you can play so many games for a low cost.
They can learn from them as well. You can monitor just what they
are doing. If you are a parent trying to figure out where you
stand with your children being online, consider it a learning
experience to allow them to surf with you, even if it’s just
once. Then, you will be able to see just what is out there to
offer your children and how well they enjoy it.
