Any metal besides stainless steel that is not coated with a sealer or a metal finish such as chrome will acquire a “patina” over time. This means the finish will change and evolve through exposure to the environment. Some call this “oxidation” (exposure to oxygen) but this patina process is also caused by other environmental factors that the metal surface might come into contact with as well as wear resulting from regular use.

When applied to plumbing fixtures, the question comes up most often regarding copper sinks. Faucet and drain hardware manufacturers generally address this issue with certain coatings that protect the metal surface from the environment, thus preventing patina or changes in the finish. However, these types of coatings (PVD or other types of clear protective finishes) are more difficult to apply to a larger surface area such as that of a sink and require a more “production” like manufacturing process. Thus many of the artisan crafted copper and bronze sinks are not sealed and will have a true living finish.

Metal products with a chrome finish or stainless steel products are often referred to as “non-living”. This is only partially true. The surfaces of these products can, in fact, dull over time depending on the environment and how well they are cared for. We have also heard nickel referred to as “non-living finish” but the fact is that nickel will patina or “tarnish” as well. However, this process is significantly slower than unprotected copper or bronze.

With unprotected brass, bronze or copper, the patina process occurs more quickly. What happens to the metal finish over time? The answer to this question depends on whether or not a patina was applied artificially when the sink was made, the environmental factors present when in use, how much the product is used (wear) and the type of maintenance or care employed.

If you are purchasing a copper sink that has a finish (i.e. it isn’t a “shiny copper”), heat and/or chemicals have been applied to accelerate the aging process. You will see such terms as “oil rubbed bronze” or “weathered copper”. To create these finishes, the metal has been exposed to a chemical bath and possibly heat as well, that reacts with the metal and changes the color. The darker the finish, the less the metal will patina or age after it’s installed. In a way you are “shortcutting’ the patina process. Regardless, you still have a living finish that will evolve, but generally speaking, the darker the patina is to start with, the slower the change over time.

Environmental factors specific to your home and chemicals that may be exposed to the surface of your sink are the great unknown. Every application and environment is different. Humidity, airborne salinity, pollutants and oxygen work together with time to coat the metal surfaces with a signature patina. If you have a kitchen copper sink and expose the metal surface to certain acids such as those found in a lemon, you will actually dissolve some of the patina. The constant changes due to these myriad factors are treasured by some and not welcomed by others. Personally I like the rich hues and earthy browns that occur over time. I see this as “character” and appreciate the uniqueness in color and tone between two identical products in different environments.

If you appreciate a living finish, the care and maintenance of your sink will be fairly straightforward. If you wish to prevent it, this is possible to a certain extent. There are several different ways you can slow down the patina process. Applying a brass or furniture wax that does not contain polish or cleaners can slow the change in patina much the same way an automotive wax protects the finish of your car. If desired, patina on a sink can be removed with a metal polish or mild acid such as lemon juice or vinegar. Waxing the surface will preserve the shine, or the sink can be left untreated to develop a new patina.

Oftentimes we sense that our customers are fearful of a living finish. …or that this type of finish will require more maintenance. Our answer is always the same - if you don’t like the patina that you eventually end up with, you can always start over! Any copper or brass cleaner will revert the patina back to a shiny surface if you like. If left unprotected, the aging process starts over again and within a few weeks you will begin seeing the metal surface darken. In addition, you can always buy a sink with a darker finish and keep the surface waxed. This will ensure the least amount of change over time. As for maintenance, occasional cleaning with soap and water is really all you need to do. If you opt to wax your sink, this is generally something you will need to do only every 3 - 6 months depending on the amount of use. It’s no wonder that the word outdoor carpet sends shudders down
a person’s spine. But those days are gone.

Today there are a wide selection of both colors and textures
from the very plush to the basic. You can even choose varying
grades of carpet. So all that’s left to know is how to install
outdoor carpet.

Before we get into how to install outdoor carpet let’s have a
look at the tools you’ll need.

• 50 lb Carpet Roller -
  optional but well worth the rental fee because of the nice tight
  seal it provides.
• Utility Knife - make sure the blade is sharp
• Straight Edge
• Adhesive Spreader
• Scissors
• Tape Measure

You will require the following
materials

• Double faced carpet tape
• Adhesive
• Adhesive solvent [mild]
• Seam Adhesive
• Solvent To Ensure The Surface is Clean

Some things you should be aware of.

• If you are
  buying outdoor carpet that is going to be prone to dampness or
  serious wetness be sure the carpet has an all weather marine
  backing that is resistant to moisture.
• Outdoor carpet can be purchased in either 6 foot or 12 foot
  widths.
• Sundecks or areas that get a large amount of sun should be
  installed using a quality outdoor carpet adhesive to ensure
  there are no problems with rot or mildew.
• Adhesives are flammable so do not use around open flames,
  cigarettes, pilot lights, or any other source of flame.

Now to the main attraction, how to install outdoor carpet

1. Prepare your surface

Make sure you have properly prepared your surface by using a
solvent to remove all grime and dirt. Let it dry out completely
before installing the carpet. The best conditions for installing
your carpet are in a humidity range from 10% to 65%, and
temperatures between 55 F and 95 F.

2. Unroll

Unroll the carpet in the location where you are going to
install it. Let is sit for an hour or two to allow for expansion.

3. Tape room

Take your two sided double tape and place the tape around the
outer edge of the room on the sub floor. Make sure there is no
more than a 2 foot spacing between each strip of tape. Leave the
protective paper on the top side of the tape so as not to loose
the adhesion.

4. Center It

Next center the carpet in the room. Position it so the edges
are able to curl up against the wall. Allow at least 3″ on each
side. You can trim excess away later.

5. Cut A Ways

Trim around protrusion and outside corner edges by making a
vertical slice down the carpet. Remember cutting a corner
correctly makes installing your carpet much easier.

6. Inside Corners

To fit your carpet on inside corners you need to do a V cut
where it over laps. Move slow and carefully when making these
cuts so that you do not cut too far.

7. Seams

If your room needs to be seamed be sure you have the pile
running in the same direction so that the seam is the least
noticeable. You should overlap from 2 to 3 inches.

To make a double cut seam take your straight edge and utility
knife and cut through both layers at exactly the same time using
the tools together.

8. Wall To Center

Start against the wall and then fold the carpet back half way
but don’t move the half that still down.

9. Apply Adhesive

If you are doing a permanent installation this is when you will
use your adhesive [make sure the room is well ventilated]. Take
a notched spreader, apply adhesive, and then apply the adhesive
to the sub floor. Follow instructions on the adhesive.

10. Unroll

Now slowly roll the carpet you rolled back earlier back into
place. Smooth out any bumps and make sure you’ve got it lined up
properly. If you were careful rolling it back all should be fine.

11. Repeat

Repeat the entire process above for the other side of the room
now.

12. Carpet Roller

Now take your carpet roller [if you rented one] and run it
across the entire carpet to get the adhesive to properly adhere
all over the carpet.

13. Trim

Now is the time to use that sharp utility knife and trim away
the excess on the edges around the outside of the room. Now is
the time to clip any threads you see as well so that they don’t
start to unravel.

14. Clean Up

Clean away any excessive adhesive using a mild solvent. Follow
the instructions provided by the manufacturer.

15. Connect The Dots

Or in this case connect the rooms. If you are laying outdoor
carpet in more than one room use metal binder strips to cover
the join.

Danny Rhodehamel from Inyo Pool Products has found that many of his customer’s have problems with their pool equipment not starting properly during spring start up. Rhodehamel stated “many people do not close their swimming pool properly during the spring and it may cause unnecessary expenses during spring start up” Here is a check list of things to do before closing your pool for the winter.

By properly closing your pool for winter, you spend less time and money opening your pool in the spring will eliminate additional electrical costs, chemicals and cleaning avoids possible freeze damage to equipment and plumbing

Step 1

Several days prior to closing the pool, test the water for pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness and chlorine. Adjust levels if necessary. It is important to get the water balanced to protect the pool from corrosion or scale buildup that can occur during the period the pool is shut down. Use a water test kit to test for:

PH 7.2 - 7.6

Alkalinity 80 - 120 ppm

Calcium Hardness 175 - 250 ppm

Chlorine 1 - 3 ppm

Step 2

Your pool needs to be clean before winterizing. Brush and vacuum sides and bottom. Use Super Shimmer or a Clarifier to get water crystal clear. Lower water level while vacuuming (set filter to waste bypassing sand). Clean the tile line with Tile & Vinyl Cleaner to remove oil and scum line. This will be easier to get off now before it sets on during winter months.

Step 3

To help protect water quality during the winter months, use a Winterizing Kit. Follow instruction on product labels. Additional algaecide and shock can be purchased separately for larger size pools.

Step 4

Clean the filter, skimmer, and pump basket. Remove all unused chlorine product from Chlorinator. Cartridge filter elements and D.E. grids should be sprayed with Filter Cleaner and rinsed clean with a garden hose. Sand Filters should be backwashed.

Step 5

Lower water of pool below returns and skimmer. Never completely drain a pool - Hydrostatic pressure can cause damage. Using an air compressor or shop vac (attached to the blower side of the vac), blow water out of system by forcing air down skimmer and through the plumbing. Add Anti-Freeze to plumbing and install threaded winter plugs to return fittings to keep water out of lines. Anti-Freeze is a non-toxic formula. DO NOT USE AUTOMOBILE ANTIFREEZE.

Step 6

Remove all drain plugs from pump, filter tank and any other pool equipment. Follow the manufacturers’ instructions for your specific equipment. Place all drain plugs in pump basket for storage.

Step 7

Air pillows need to be inflated with a leaf blower or shop vac. Tie off air pillow in the center of pool, larger pools will require 2 or more air pillows. The air pillows will shed water toward the edge of pool for easier removal. They also allow forming ice to crack inward preventing damage to the shell or structure of the pool.

Step 8

Place winter cover over pool surface, black side down. There are different covers for in ground and above ground pools.

Above Ground Pools:

A cable and winch are included to fasten cover under top ledge of pool.

In Ground Pools and Pools With Decks:

Place water tubes end to end around edge of pool. Fill water tubes 1/2 full of water (do not over fill or expanding water will damage water tube). Water tubes are sold separately. Never use concrete blocks, bricks, etc to secure cover because they can damage pool cover or pool.

If you follow these easy steps in the winter. Spring Start up will be a snap!
