Can We Make Algebra Easier?

March 31st, 2009

What is Algebra?

Maths has long been one of the most terrifying subjects in American schools. Although pupils in other countries graduate with excellence in maths, most of the average high school age students in the United States scratch their heads when given questions about converting fractions to decimals, converting measures and units, solving radical inequalities, or solving radical equations. It makes sense that this predicament is as broad as it is. Algebra is such a wide-encompassing range of different mathematical equations that it is easy for a student to get lost when expected to explain synthetic division or adding polynomials . For that matter, algebra is largely based on using letters to substitute for numbers. While this isn’t highly complicated in and of itself, it lends itself poorly to the ‘jump in and play’ view of some mathematics. Simply talking, if a person is supposed to perform a particular algebraic task, he or she should be aware of the algebraic tasks that preceded it. This is to say that Algebra is a process that requires mastery of every step in order to advance. A pupil can’t hope for finding square root radicals and roots when he or she has not mastered proportions and ratios, or converting measures and units.

Technological Breakthroughs:

Although this is nothing new, it seems that mathematics grades have slipped even further in recent years. The fault can be ascribed to many parties, but no solution comes out of finger pointing. Recently, there have been extracurricular helps on the market to assist children develop mathematical skills when out of the class. What little computer software or program there was, more geared towards aiding younger students grasp the constructs of arithmetic. Fortunately, the market for such a product has coincided with the technology essential, allowing an inflow of ‘algebra software‘ or ‘algebra solver‘ programs that let the mastery of algebra to anybody with a computer and a mouse.

Algebra Solvers:

These algebra calculators vary depending on the brand and the program. Some may offer some abilities as graphing a circle, or solving simultaneous equations, but may not have the programming required for resolving exponential equations or adding exponents . The users are advised to assess the algebra software upon purchase, but many algebra solver computer packages will promote their strengths. The best bet for anybody who is interested in computer assistance for subtracting rational expressions or converting decimals to fractions; fundamentally, whatever specific need you would have, is to refer the World Wide Web and explore the product in question.

Rousseau - Slavery, War, and Natural Law

March 31st, 2009

Jean-Jacques Rousseau in his writing The Social Contract, (Rousseau), philosophizes on what a civil society entails. Rousseau shows great ability to allow reason to prevail over manipulation in his political assertions. In the writings ‘Of Slavery’ section, Rousseau examines the nature of conflicts and alleges that war exists between states and not man. Rousseau applies reason to the actions of man and claims it to be a requirement for civil society to exist. Following his logic, he surmises that slavery of individuals and/or whole societies cannot exist in a civil world because this contract would be invalid in the eyes of reason and nature. I believe Rousseau’s ideas are sound in principal and should and some should be incorporated into modern legal doctrines. Natural law works subtly against violators of it by natural methods. This sometimes takes its form in the conscience of people and directs them to act helping to regulate natural order.

Rousseau attempts in his writing to show that there is a higher reasoning than the conscience of man, and this is verbalized in his statement concerning men who submit into a contract of slavery voluntarily, “for to alienate another’s liberty is contrary to the natural order, …” (Rousseau 61).

Rousseau continues that slavery is a not a valid contract by reasoning fairness to both parties does not exist, in effect making such an arrangement in the eyes of common sense “vain and meaningless” (Rousseau, 61).

It is easy enough for slaves to agree with this train of thought; but what is there to make free people or slaveholders to find truth in Rousseau’s beliefs?

Rousseau’s rhetoric involves presenting scenarios, often the opinions of others, and countering them in accordance to his philosophies. Using Grotius’ theory on the rationalization for slavery of the defeated in war, Rousseau briefly looks at these justifications to lay a base of reasons, creating contrast for his own opinions on which he then elucidates. Grotius held that it is a right of the victor to extirpate, referring to the defeated, he followed this argument by concluding that it is within the victor’s rights to “ransom his life at the expense of his liberty”(Rousseau, 62).

Grotius elaborates in his book On the Law of War and Peace referring to enslaving losers of war, “Nor is the commission of crime requisite to reduce them to this condition, but the fate of all is alike, who are unfortunately taken within the territories of an enemy, upon the breaking out of war” (Grotius). Grotius’ opinions give no merit to moral civility. The ruler or ruling that denies the property and liberty to the individuals of a defeated nation or group is fighting an uphill battle on civility and natural law, forces that are often underestimated by corrupt oppressors. The definition of natural law that I am referring to is well defined in James A. Donald’s Natural Law and Natural Rights including “Conduct which violates natural law is conduct such that, if a man were to use individual unorganized violence to prevent such conduct, or, in the absence of orderly society, use individual unorganized violence to punish such conduct, then such violence would not indicate that the person using such violence, (violence in accord with natural law) is a danger to a reasonable man” (Donald).

Donald and I agree that this theory of natural law is embedded in human nature and government policies that go against the ingrained human core morals will always be subject to resistance equaling that to which it is opposed. When evaluating causes and definition of war, one can see that indiscriminate killing and slavery are direct extensions of war, and being such will always face opposition.

Rousseau goes into some depth on what he considers reasons for war. He argues that men become enemies through war by accident, further claiming that wars exist over property rather than person (Rousseau, 62). Being so, he argues that a just victor prince, in reflection of his own laws, will respect the lives of his captives and their property as individuals, but not the property of the fallen state. What I find most compelling of Rousseau’s points falls in his statement, “The object of war being the destruction of the enemy state, a commander has a perfect right to kill its defenders so long as their arms are in their hands: but once they have laid them down and have submitted, they cease to be enemies, or instruments employed by an enemy, and revert to the condition of men, pure and simple, over whose lives no one can any longer exercise a rightful claim” (Rousseau, 62). This train of thought is followed in his next paragraph, “If war does not give to the victor the right to massacre his defeated enemies, he cannot base upon a nonexistent right any claim to the further one of enslaving them” (Rousseau, 63).

I cannot sit back and watch the beating of a defenseless child, I must intervene. This compulsion is a manifestation of natural law. To silently observe without contest the rape of another or the willful destruction of another’s property, the lack of challenge of such actions make the observer a participant by condoning such oppression. As an individual and as part of a nation, I find it an inherent duty to make effort to curtail blatant and excessive practices that would shock the moral conscience of free men by consensus (a method natural law dictates), of nations and individuals alike. Excessive exposure to violations of natural law are used to pacify its predominance by socially conditioning a numbing of man’s innate sense to critical violations of natural law by creating overwhelming conditions that can confuse and build tolerance in the morally inclined. The portrayal of wars conducted by the United States by the media is one example of this infusion of acceptance by overwhelming viewers with examples of rationalized treachery.

In The Social Contract, Rousseau spells out what he believes are necessary virtues for a civil society to exist. His progressive ideas toward slavery contrasted its actual widespread institution. While some would differ from his opinion, his carefully thought and expressed views have been often considered over the 200 years since first being published. Natural law was not invented nor created, it was discovered. Entwined to us since our conception, it is a law, though unwritten and underappreciated, violations of it, even the most encompassing and conniving are guaranteed to face permanent resistance at all points. Practices that do not conflict natural law have more than sum of its parts (supporters), the permanent effects of reason will further these applications.

Online Education Has The Power To Transform Lives And Fulfill Dreams

March 30th, 2009

Online education is a dramatic development in the advancement of distance learning. A century ago, a person without access to a school or training program could sometimes get the information that they desired through a correspondence course. It was not a particularly efficient way to get an education but it did open doors that might otherwise have been closed. The quantum leaps in technology during the latter part of the 20th century have altered the profile of distance learning.

Students that cannot attend classes at a traditional college campus can now participate in the same course of study as those attending day or evening school. Online education programs are structured such that a student can integrate lessons into their unique daily schedules. Participants have the flexibility to complete their work when it is convenient but communicate with instructors whenever it is necessary. You can now pursue a college degree at your own pace with a course load that is appropriate for you.

Online education is rapidly evolving and courses are available for a variety of subjects. It is possible for someone to finish their high school studies and obtain a GED online. Courses and certifications are also available in a variety of technical areas. An ever-expanding number of degree programs are available. Students can earn a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree for an impressive list of disciplines.

The Internet is moving well beyond e-mails and e-commerce. Predictions of an Information Age are proving prophetic as the information superhighway carries more and more vehicles transporting ideas opening the door to an education that may have been denied to many. Online education has resulted in thousands of virtual classrooms that offer the possibility for accomplishment and advancement for all.

In an age where everyone and everthing is stretched too thin it is refreshing to know that the Internet provides legitimate resources that allow almost anyone to learn about almost anything. You can now feel confident that life and opportunity are not passing you by. Higher education is noiw available to any person with the drive, the desire and a personal computer.

College Study Tips: Work Smarter, Not Harder

March 28th, 2009

Here are some benefits to studying for your college classes the right way: more leisure time, less stress, less pressure from your parents, less debt, better grades, and better career opportunities. Sound worthwhile? That doesn’t mean there isn’t work involved, but it’s how you accomplish the work that matters. You can either work smarter, or keep spinning your wheels while barely hanging on to passing grades. Follow these tips to make the most of your time and mental resources:

Establish Successful Habits. Here’s a simple formula: Successful habits lead to success and unsuccessful habits lead to failure. Commit to studying by establishing a set time and place. Eliminate distractions, turn off your cell phone and for that time period dedicate 100 percent of your energy to learning.

Get Roommate Cooperation: Discuss with your roommate the best times for you to study. Make that time off-limits to guests and loud distractions.

Prepare. Read the topic chapters before the lecture. (If you haven’t purchased the book yet, now is the time to do it!) This will get you familiar with the material and give you an indication of what the professor thinks is most important by what is stressed in the lecture.

Take Notes. As you read, write notes on what you think are the important points. Then, during the lecture, use a highlighter to mark your reading notes when the professor touches on the same points. Take new notes on material that is not in your book or that you did not already write down.

Study More Often for Less Time. Cram sessions are the least effective way to learn and retain information. It may sound cool to pull an all-nighter, but actually, you’re wasting your time as it prevents your brain and body from functioning at peak levels. Break up your study sessions into 45-minute blocks with a 10-15 minute break in between. Grab something to eat, stretch, or go for a walk. This gives your brain a chance to absorb the material. Of course this requires that you plan ahead instead of waiting to crack open your book the night before!

Study in Groups. Studying with other people helps to reinforce the material by discussing, clarifying, and repeating it in your own words. In addition, it also forces you to commit to a time and place to study since other people are counting on you.

Relate it to Real Life. It’s much easier to digest and remember information in the context of a story or personal example than memorizing a bunch of unrelated facts. Whenever you can, relate the material to real life. Find examples in your personal experiences, music, books, current news stories, business, pop culture, or case studies. Need help? Ask your professor!

American Exceptionalism: US International Interventions Since 1990

March 28th, 2009

Going through the history of International relations in the post- cold war era, you can observe several political crises originating from the military and clandestine operations of the United States. This overflow of international crises dealing with America’s operations are better defined as” US interventions”. This concept of intervention is a well- known term in the political history of the world, especially during the 90s in the United States, George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton’s presidency. Not a single country has ever meddled with international affairs irrelevant to its country than the United States, However, in some periods Soviet Union was playing US exceptional current role in the world. Through history, it has been proved that US foreign policy is basically laid upon its national interests, whether political or economical. These policies are mostly legitimized by expressing moralities and ethical issues. But the motivation attracting US to persue such policies is to introduce himself as a new economic and political ruler for the world, as William Blum indicated; “The engine of American foreign policy has been fueled not by a devotion to any kind of morality, but rather by the necessity to serve other imperatives”.1

The end of Cold War provided United States with a kind of unprecedented preponderance over other countries. US economy and its defense spending a much greater than its rivals, “its economy is 40% larger than the second country. U.S. military spending ($343 billion in the year 2000) is 69 percent greater than that of the next five highest nations combined” (qtd. in. Zoltan Grossman, 2001)2. US is now ruling the world in higher education, scientific research and advance technology so that others can hardly catch up with this superpower. This extraordinary strategic position of the US is a great implication for its foreign policy. When Soviet Union has gone, US leaders can pursue their goals without worrying how others will respond and these goals will undoubtedly affect other countries. During the 90s, United States had the most number of international interventions all over the world, approximately 17 cases in which the most important ones occurred in Middle East. The major interventions are as follows: 1990 in Iraq (Gulf War), 1991 in Haiti, 1992-1994 in Yugoslavia, 1993- 1995 in Bosnia, 1994- 1996 in Haiti, 1995 in Croatia, 1996- 1997 in Zaire (Congo), 1997 in Liberia, 1998 in Sudan, 1998 in Afghanistan, 1998 in Iraq, 1999 in Yugoslavia, 2001 in Macedonia, 2001 in Afghanistan and so many other sanctions signed in UN Security council against Iran, Iraq and Cuba. All of these military interventions can be defined through the idea of New World Order first stated by George H. W. Bush, which US administrators have always been thinking “they” are to realize this “Order”- believed to be a real disorder by others- by all means.

Here, we will be discussing some more important interventions. 1990, After Iraq invades Kuwait, the U.S. deployed forces in the Persian Gulf which turned Washington against its former Iraqi ally Saddam Hussein. U.S. supported the Kuwaiti monarchy and the Muslim fundamentalist monarchy against the secular Iraq regime. US drop more bombs than in all of Vietnam or World War II, the air campaign kills between 100,000 and 200,000 Iraqis and destroys civilian infrastructure. US allow Iraqi helicopters use of “No-fly Zone” airspace to crush the uprising. Relentless bombing for more than 40 days and nights, against one of the most advanced nations in the Middle East, devastating its ancient and modern capital city; depleted uranium weapons incinerating people, causing cancer; blasting chemical and biological weapon storage and oil facilities; poisoning the atmosphere to a degree perhaps never happened anywhere; burying soldiers alive, deliberately; sanctions continued to this day multiplying the health problems; perhaps a million children dead by now from malnutrition and disease. Iraq was the strongest military power among the Arab states. This may have been their crime. Another reason dealing US intervention in pulling out Iraq from Kuwait is “not to keep oil prices low, but to keep Washington, Wall Street, and their allies in charge of setting oil prices” (qtd. in. Noam Chomsky, 1991)3. “It’s been a leading, driving doctrine of U.S. foreign policy since the 1940s that the vast and unparalleled energy resources of the Gulf region will be effectively dominated by the United States and its clients, and, crucially, that no independent, indigenous force will be permitted to have a substantial influence on the administration of oil production and price.” (qtd. In. Noam Chosky, 1991)4.

The other crucial intervention which is called a “humanitarian intervention” ocuured in Bosnia and Yugoslavia during 1993- 1995 and 1999. Other so-called “humanitarian interventions” were centered in the Balkan region of Europe, after the 1992 breakup of the federation of Yugoslavia. The U.S. watched for three years as Serb forces killed Muslim civilians in Bosnia, before its launched decisive bombing raids in 1995. Even then, it never intervened to stop atrocities by Croatian forces against Muslim and Serb civilians, because those forces were aided by the U.S. In 1999, the U.S. bombed Serbia to force President Slobodan Milosevic to withdraw forces from the ethnic Albanian province of Kosovo. The bombing intensified Serbian expulsions and killings of Albanian civilians from Kosovo, and caused the deaths of thousands of Serbian civilians, even in cities that had voted strongly against Milosevic. When a NATO occupation force enabled Albanians to move back, U.S. forces did little or nothing to prevent similar brutality against Serb and other non-Albanian civilians. The U.S. was viewed as a biased player.

1998, in Sudan the US had missile attacks on a pharmaceutical plant alleged to be “terrorist” nerve gas plant. Over 30000 civilians were injured. US blocks UN war-crimes inquiry at the Security Council.
The last but not the least intervention is still going on. In 2003, to pursue its post 9/11 policies, US invaded Iraq with large ground, air and naval forces oust government of Saddam Hussein and established a new government. Since the September 11 attacks on the United States, most people in the world agree that the perpetrators need to be brought to justice, without killing many thousands of civilians in the process. But unfortunately, the U.S. military has always accepted massive civilian deaths as part of the cost of war. The military is now poised to kill thousands of foreign civilians, in order to prove that killing U.S. civilians is wrong.

“It is a big idea: a new world order… only the United States has both the moral standing & the means to back it up.”
Former President George Bush, USA Jan. 29, 1991

What is today very much apparent is that US is showing its crisis management all over the world roling as an international police. The final goal US is trying to obtain is “the extension of its political and economic hegemony as wide as possible”.
